CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — A beloved green ogre and a cast of fairytale misfits are heading to the stage this Labor Day weekend as the Champaign Urbana Theatre Company’s Penguin Project presents Shrek the Musical Jr. at Urbana High School.

The family-friendly production runs for three performances:

  • Friday, August 29 at 7:00 PM
  • Saturday, August 30 at 3:00 PM
  • Sunday, August 31 at 3:00 PM

Based on the hit DreamWorks movie and Broadway adaptation, Shrek the Musical Jr. is a celebration of difference, self-acceptance, and friendship—all delivered with humor, heart, and plenty of swampy fun.

This special production is part of the Penguin Project, a national program that empowers young artists with disabilities to perform in fully inclusive shows, supported by peer mentors. This year’s cast features 30 artists and 35 mentors, ages 11 to 21, representing over 17 area schools, including homeschoolers and students in nontraditional programs.

“Every single artist gets their individual moment to shine,” said Melia Watson, director of the production and a functional life skills teacher at Centennial High School. “They are incredibly talented and natural performers. This year’s show will be funny, heartfelt, and perfect for all ages.”

Tickets are available now at www.cutheatreco.org/tickets or at the door.
