CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A late-night apartment fire in Champaign was quickly brought under control Saturday thanks to a building sprinkler system and a rapid response from firefighters.

The Champaign Fire Department responded at 11:41 p.m. to a report of a mattress fire on the third floor of a large multi-family apartment building in the 700 block of South Third Street. Upon arrival, crews found that a single activated sprinkler head had already largely extinguished the flames.

Firefighters used a fire extinguisher to put out remaining hot spots and worked to clear smoke from the building. Officials said the fire was contained to a small area, limiting damage.

The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and linked to a candle, according to the department.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
