DANVILLE, IL (Chambana Today) — Cannon Park in North Danville is currently undergoing a full renovation of its tennis court, with improvements that include a new asphalt surface, upgraded lighting, new nets, and a complete equipment overhaul. According to Joe Claypool, Facility and Grounds Manager for the City of Danville, work is expected to be completed during the week of September 22.

Crews have begun removing the old playing surface and equipment to make way for the updated court. The City is asking residents and visitors to avoid the area while work is underway to ensure the safety of both the public and construction crews.

Cathie Hall, a nearby resident and head of the Legionland Crime Watch/Neighborhood group, expressed her excitement about the updates. “For several years, we have brought this up to the Mayor. This really needed to happen, so we are thankful for the three people who helped push this and were involved in making this happen,” she said, crediting Aldermen Poshard and Cooper, along with resident Lon Henderson.

While local kids had temporarily installed a basketball hoop in the park, there are currently no formal plans to add permanent basketball facilities at Cannon Park. “At some point, we may put up a portable basketball hoop on the fences,” Claypool said.

Cannon Park’s renovation is part of a broader effort to revitalize parks throughout the city. Elmwood Park is also being updated, and Lincoln Park is receiving two brand-new basketball courts. Those courts are nearing completion, with sealants and final paint coatings being applied. Lincoln Park’s courts are expected to reopen within two weeks.

These efforts reflect the city’s ongoing investment in public spaces and recreational opportunities for Danville residents.
