URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — After months of debate, Champaign County has officially passed a year-long moratorium on the construction of new data centers. The decision, made during a packed meeting on Thursday evening, aims to give the county sufficient time to draft and implement new regulations for these massive technology hubs.
The moratorium, which will take effect immediately, will put a temporary halt on any data center proposals for the next 12 months. This decision comes after weeks of deliberation and input from local residents, environmental groups, and business owners, all of whom have expressed concerns about the environmental impact and the amount of energy these centers consume.
The meeting at the Bennett Administrative Center saw dozens of community members voicing their opinions, with many advocating for more time to craft a thoughtful ordinance that can effectively regulate the growth of data centers in the region. Some, however, argued that a nine-month moratorium would be more reasonable, warning that extending the pause might cause unnecessary uncertainty.
Despite differing opinions, the county board ultimately voted to approve the 12-month moratorium, signaling a clear message that more careful planning is needed before proceeding with new data center projects.
With the clock ticking on this one-year period, the county’s zoning board will work to develop an ordinance that considers the potential long-term impacts of data centers, particularly on local power grids and environmental sustainability.
