URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) — After months of debate, Champaign County has officially passed a year-long moratorium on the construction of new data centers. The decision, made during a packed meeting on Thursday evening, aims to give the county sufficient time to draft and implement new regulations for these massive technology hubs.

The moratorium, which will take effect immediately, will put a temporary halt on any data center proposals for the next 12 months. This decision comes after weeks of deliberation and input from local residents, environmental groups, and business owners, all of whom have expressed concerns about the environmental impact and the amount of energy these centers consume.
