CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) — Law enforcement agencies across Champaign County will increase efforts to crack down on distracted driving violations throughout April as part of a statewide safety campaign.

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office announced it is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and other local agencies in recognition of Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The initiative will focus on identifying and citing motorists who engage in behaviors such as texting, using social media, watching videos or otherwise handling electronic devices while driving.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman said distracted driving remains a significant safety concern and warned that even momentary lapses in attention can lead to serious consequences.

During the campaign, deputies will conduct increased patrols and issue citations for observed violations. Officials noted that fines for distracted driving start at $75 and can increase in certain situations, including in school zones or when a crash results.

Under Illinois law, drivers are prohibited from manually using electronic communication devices while operating a vehicle, including when stopped at a red light. Hands-free devices are permitted for phone calls.

Authorities are encouraging drivers to avoid distractions altogether by putting their phones away while behind the wheel.

The enforcement effort is funded through federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
