CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate Darren Bailey and his wife, Cindy, are mourning the deaths of their son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren following a helicopter crash in Montana on Wednesday.

In a statement released by Bailey’s campaign, the couple confirmed that their son, Zachary Bailey, his wife, Kelsey, and their children, Vada Rose, 12, and Samuel, 7, were killed in the crash. A third child, Finn, was not aboard the helicopter and survived.

“Darren and Cindy are heartbroken by this unimaginable loss,” the campaign said. “They are finding comfort in their faith, their family, and the prayers of so many who love and care for them.” The Baileys asked for privacy as they grieve.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced it is investigating a helicopter crash near Ekalaka, Montana, though it has not yet confirmed whether it is the same incident.

Bailey, who previously served as a state senator and ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2022, is seeking to unseat Gov. J.B. Pritzker in the 2026 election.

Funeral arrangements for the Bailey family have not yet been announced.
