CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — Three Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate met in Champaign to share their views on affordability, Medicaid and human rights ahead of the upcoming primary election.

Dozens gathered at the Church of the Living God for the UIS Democratic Senate Forum, organized by the Illinois State NAACP.

Theodis Pace, president of the Illinois State NAACP, said the event was an opportunity for voters to engage directly with candidates before casting their ballots.

Vying for the seat currently held by Dick Durbin are U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, Lt. Gov. Julianna Stratton and U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

Kelly emphasized experience and results over fundraising totals or political backing. “It’s not about how much money you have or who supports you, it’s what have you done,” she said.

Stratton said her campaign centers on listening to voters and responding to their concerns. “My campaign is really focused on giving the people what they want,” she said.

Krishnamoorthi echoed concerns about affordability, pointing to potential cuts to social safety net programs. “The food stamps and the public housing that enabled us to survive is on the chopping block,” he said.

Affordability emerged as a central theme throughout the forum. Kelly cited rising costs for housing, jobs and health care as major challenges facing Illinois families.

Pace said events like the forum are also meant to energize and inspire young voters. While many residents are registered, he said, the key is motivating them to turn out on Election Day.

The Illinois primary election is scheduled for March 17.
