Driver arrested for Aggravated DUI after striking bicyclist in St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, IL (Chambana Today) — A 72-year-old female bicyclist was injured after being struck by a vehicle on Thursday, August 21, around 7:40 p.m. at the intersection of East Grand Street and Sherwood Drive in St. Joseph, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle, a 2005 GMC Yukon driven by Stanley Duitsman, 61, of Ogden, was turning from a stop sign when it hit the cyclist. The woman sustained minor injuries, including a possible broken ankle, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Following an investigation, Duitsman was arrested on multiple charges, including Aggravated Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, and Illegal Possession or Transportation of Alcohol by a Driver.

The incident remains under investigation by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
