CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Gateway Family Services of Illinois is inviting community partners and local businesses to sponsor its annual holiday fundraiser, Christmas in the Barn, an event that plays a critical role in supporting trauma-focused mental health services for families and veterans across the region.
Gateway, headquartered in southern Champaign County, provides a wide range of therapies—including equine-assisted psychotherapy, EMDR, art, play, sand, and nature-based modalities—and recently added Newborn Behavioral Observations and medication management to its programs. With a staff of licensed professionals, the organization serves more than 120 families and veterans each week.
This year’s call for sponsorship comes on the heels of Gateway’s first-ever two-day Veteran Retreat, an experience that staff described as “transformational” for participating service members. The retreat is part of the agency’s expanding efforts to bring connection-based healing to veterans, families, children and individuals who have experienced trauma.

Christmas in the Barn, held each December, features more than 60 decorated trees and displays, guided barn tours, meet-and-greets with therapy horses, hot chocolate, cookies, and a silent auction. Funds raised directly support the equines that make Gateway’s signature program—Horses Helping Humans Heal—possible.
“We know hope begins with connection, and our equines are at the center of that,” Gateway leaders said in their sponsorship outreach. “Christmas in the Barn helps ensure these animals can continue offering life-changing support to the people we serve.”
The event also includes a Sensory Sensitive Christmas session designed for guests who may be overwhelmed by traditional holiday environments.
Businesses and individuals can sponsor a tree or wreath, donate items for the silent auction, volunteer to assist with setup or hosting, or contribute financially. Sponsorship packets, event details, and donation links are available at ChristmasInTheBarn.org and GatewayFamilyServices.org.
