CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — The Illinois Department of Public Health announced it will adopt the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2026 child and adolescent immunization schedule, following recommendations from the Illinois Immunization Advisory Committee.

State health officials said the endorsement is intended to provide clarity and consistency for families and health care providers amid recent federal changes to childhood vaccine guidance that are not supported by strong scientific evidence. The AAP schedule continues to universally recommend routine childhood and adolescent vaccines backed by extensive research and previously endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 2026 AAP schedule does not change Illinois’ existing immunization recommendations, which IDPH officials said remain grounded in long-established science. All vaccines recommended by IDPH are required to be covered by state-regulated insurance plans and are also covered through private insurance, Medicaid, and the federal Vaccines for Children program.

The agency, in consultation with the advisory committee, will continue reviewing emerging research and national guidance to ensure Illinois’ recommendations remain science-based.
