SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambnana Today) – The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) is reminding taxpayers that the deadline to file 2024 state individual income tax returns is Tuesday, April 15. The department began accepting tax returns on January 27, the same day the IRS began accepting federal returns.

IDOR Director David Harris encourages taxpayers to file electronically and choose direct deposit for the fastest processing and refund issuance. Additionally, Illinois is participating in the IRS Direct File program, allowing eligible taxpayers to file their federal returns directly with the IRS for free and then easily transfer the information into MyTax Illinois to file state taxes at no cost.

“IRS Direct File offers free filing, step-by-step guidance, and real-time support,” Harris said. The program aims to save time and reduce errors when filing both federal and state taxes.

Taxpayers who file electronically with no errors can expect a direct deposit refund within about four weeks. If an extension is needed, individuals can automatically extend their filing deadline to October 15, but any taxes owed must be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties.

For assistance, taxpayers can call IDOR’s help numbers at 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336. Extended telephone hours are available on April 14 and 15.

For more information, visit IDOR’s website at tax.illinois.gov.
