MONTICELLO, IL (Chambana Today) — The Monticello Area Community Garden will celebrate its 10th year with the launch of the 2026 gardening season. The University of Illinois Extension, in partnership with the City of Monticello and Kirby Medical Center, will host a kick-off meeting on April 27 at 6 p.m. at the Piatt County Extension Office, located at 210 S. Market St. This event will provide gardeners with essential information about the upcoming season, including garden guidelines, organic planting methods, and details on how to apply for a garden plot.

Participants can reserve a 12’ x 12’ or 12’ x 24’ tilled plot at the garden, located across from Kirby Medical Center. The garden season runs from May 1 through October 15, and participants will have access to onsite watering facilities. A small annual fee and deposit are required to take part.

“This is the 10th year for the community garden, and everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out,” says Beth Miglin, Horticulture Program Coordinator. “Dig in and grow your favorite fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers this summer.”

Interested attendees can register for the kick-off meeting by April 27 at go.illinois.edu/MGardenKickoff, and can reserve their garden plot by visiting go.illinois.edu/digin.

The University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. Those needing accommodations to participate are encouraged to contact the Extension office at 217-762-2191.
