CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — If you recently picked up a bag of Golden Island Fire-Grilled Korean Barbecue Pork Jerky from Costco or Sam’s Club, you might want to check your pantry. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a nationwide recall of the product after reports of metal fragments found inside the jerky pouches.

The recall, which affects over 2 million pounds of jerky, was initiated by LSI, Inc., a South Dakota-based company. The affected jerky, which was sold in 14.5-ounce and 16-ounce plastic pouches, has been linked to potential safety concerns. The contamination, which has been traced to the conveyor belt used during production, could cause serious health issues if consumed.

Why the Recall?
The recall was triggered after consumers reported finding wiry metal pieces inside the jerky. The USDA issued a Class I recall for this product, meaning there’s a “reasonable probability” it could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death. Ingesting the metal fragments could result in punctures to the mouth, throat, stomach, or intestines, posing a potential danger, especially to vulnerable individuals.

What You Need to Know
The affected jerky products can be identified by the following details:

  • Product Name: Golden Island Fire-Grilled Pork Jerky Korean Barbecue Recipe

  • Size: 14.5-ounce and 16-ounce plastic pouches

  • Establishment Number: M279A

  • Expiration Dates: Between October 23, 2025 and September 23, 2026

Customers who have purchased the affected jerky are advised to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. While there have been no confirmed injuries linked to the contamination so far, consumers who may have already consumed the jerky should contact a healthcare provider if they have concerns.

What to Do Next
If you have one of the affected pouches, don’t consume it. Instead, take the following steps:

  • Throw it away or return it to the store for a refund.

  • If you have already eaten the jerky and feel any symptoms or have concerns, reach out to a healthcare professional immediately.
