CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) — The Champaign County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and Sheriff’s Office have received a $13,478 grant from Norfolk Southern Railway’s Safety-First Grant Program, a move officials say will strengthen the county’s emergency preparedness.

The funding will go toward purchasing new laptops for the county’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and mobile command post—two critical components of local disaster response efforts.

“Our goal at the Emergency Management Agency and with the Emergency Operations Center is to be as best prepared as possible for the disaster or crisis we hope never happens here in Champaign County,” said Sheriff Dustin Heuerman.

The EOC and mobile command post are deployed to support police, fire departments, and other emergency services during active incidents. According to EMA Coordinator John Dwyer, technology upgrades are vital to keeping response operations coordinated and effective.

“Having the latest technology is essential to deliver the best service to our responders and residents in their time of need,” Dwyer said.

The grant comes through Norfolk Southern’s Safety First Grant Program, launched in 2023 to support community safety and resilience in the 22 states the railway operates. The program prioritizes projects that enhance emergency preparedness, first responder support, and safety education.
