MONTICELLO, Ill. (Chambana Today) — The Piatt County Animal Shelter has officially broken ground on a new facility in Monticello, marking a major step toward expanded space, improved care for animals, and more support for volunteers.

The current shelter has served the area for over a decade, but with limited space and aging infrastructure, officials say it’s time for an upgrade. The new building will offer more room, individual windows for every animal, and improved sanitation and separation between species.

Two longtime supporters, former board member Suzanne Wells and veterinarian Dr. Kay Lindsay, were invited to break ground with golden shovels. Wells announced a $2,000 personal donation and issued a community challenge to raise $40,000 by March 1 to support the project.

The shelter, which relies heavily on volunteers, is encouraging the public to get involved and follow updates—and donation opportunities—through its social media channels.
