CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — In an effort to promote safe medication disposal and combat prescription drug misuse, Rep. Brandun Schweitzer is teaming up with the Village of Savoy and the Rantoul Police Department to host RX Drop-Off events. The initiative invites local residents to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications, keeping them out of the wrong hands and the environment.

“Prescription drug misuse remains a critical issue in our communities, and these drop-offs provide a safe and effective way for residents to get rid of unused medications,” said Schweitzer. “I’m proud to partner with local law enforcement to offer this valuable service to the people of our district.”

The drop-off events will be held on Friday, October 24, at two locations:

  • Savoy Village Hall, 611 N. Dunlap Ave, Savoy, IL from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.

  • Rantoul Police Department, 109 E. Grove Ave, Rantoul, IL from 1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.

Both events will be drive-up, allowing constituents to remain in their cars for a safer and more convenient experience. Residents are asked to place medications in a sealed plastic bag for disposal. Additionally, brochures on state programs will be available at both locations.

The event will accept tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid prescription medications. However, there are some restrictions on the types of items that can be disposed of, including liquids, syringes, and needles. Additionally, vaping devices and cartridges are allowed as long as lithium batteries are removed.

The initiative aims to reduce the risk of prescription drugs being abused or improperly disposed of, which can lead to environmental contamination. By providing a convenient and anonymous way to dispose of these substances, Schweitzer hopes to keep communities safer and reduce the impact of drug misuse.

For more details, including dates and locations of upcoming RX Drop-Off events, or for any questions, residents are encouraged to visit RepSchweizer.com or contact the office directly at 217-477-0104.
