SPRINGFIELD, IL (Chambana Today) — As Illinois rings in the new year, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP), and local law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to keep roads safe by targeting impaired driving, seat belt violations, speeding, and distracted driving. With millions of people traveling across the state during the New Year holiday, the goal is simple: arrive safely.
“Don’t ever drive if you’ve been drinking alcohol, using cannabis, or any other drugs. Getting behind the wheel while impaired can ruin your life—and the lives of others,” said Stephane B. Seck-Birhame, IDOT’s bureau chief of Safety Programs and Engineering. “Make the smart decision and designate a sober driver.”
The end of the year is a time for celebration, but it is also a time when the risks on the road increase. According to IDOT’s provisional data, there have been 1,123 fatalities from crashes in Illinois as of December 18, which is 10 fewer than in the same period in 2024. While the numbers show a slight decline, traffic safety advocates emphasize that almost all fatal crashes are preventable.
“End 2025 and begin 2026 on a safe note,” said ISP Division of Patrol Col. Chris Owen. “Always wear your seatbelt, avoid speeding, and never drive impaired or distracted.”
As part of the Safe New Year’s enforcement effort, law enforcement will be increasing patrols and conducting sobriety checkpoints. IDOT has also provided funding to help support these increased efforts, which are aimed at reducing traffic-related injuries and deaths.

Designated Drivers: If it’s your turn to be the designated driver, take the responsibility seriously. Your friends and family are relying on you.

Use Ride Services: If you plan to drink, consider using a ride-sharing app, a cab, or a local sober ride program.

Don’t Let Impaired Drivers on the Road: If you see someone about to drive under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or drugs, take their keys and help them find a safe way home.
The enforcement campaign is part of IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” initiative, which runs across radio, digital, and TV platforms, reminding the public of the dangers of impaired and distracted driving, as well as the importance of seatbelt use, work zone safety, and pedestrian awareness.
