Snow covers Champaign County and surrounding areas; schools and roads feeling the chill

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Champaign County woke up to a wintery mix this morning as freezing fog blanketed the region and snow flurries began falling shortly after dawn. Temperatures dipped to 26 °F, with wind chills pushing the perceived temperature even lower.

The City of Champaign Public Works Department reported that primary roadways are being treated and cleared first under its Snow & Ice Control Plan, while secondary and residential streets remain slick and snow-covered. Drivers are being urged to use extreme caution, especially on bridges and overpasses where ice forms first.

Several school districts across the county have announced delays or closures as a precaution. While some main arteries are passable, side streets and parking lots are still bad, raising concern for buses and parent drop-offs.

The City’s public works team emphasized the importance of off-street parking to allow snowplows to safely clear routes. Residents are also reminded not to shovel snow into the street, as it hampers plow efforts and violates local ordinances.

As the day progresses, the temperature will slowly climb to about 35 °F by early afternoon, but with the ground still cold and moisture present, icy patches are likely to persist even on cleared roads. Motorists and pedestrians alike are advised to proceed with care — and if possible, avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
