CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, IL (Chambana Today) — A recent St. Patrick’s Day traffic enforcement effort by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office resulted in multiple citations and one arrest as deputies worked to promote safer roadways.

According to Sheriff Dustin Heuerman, deputies conducted a four-hour special traffic detail that led to 15 traffic stops. Those stops produced 16 citations, two written warnings, one warrant-related arrest and one notice to appear.

Among the violations cited were seven seatbelt offenses and one child restraint violation. Deputies also issued citations for disobeying a stop sign, distracted driving, failure to signal, driving without a valid license, suspended registration, illegal window tint, lack of insurance and expired registration.

In addition to the citations, deputies issued two warnings — one for a missing front license plate and another for improper use of headlights or taillights.

Authorities also reported a notice to appear issued to an individual with a warrant related to driving on a suspended license. Another individual was arrested on two failure-to-appear warrants connected to previous DUI charges.

“This was an intentional effort to help make Champaign County roadways safer,” Heuerman said, noting that similar enforcement details will continue throughout the year.

The safety initiative was funded through federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High. Get a DUI” campaigns.
