CHAMPAIGN, IL (Chambana Today) — A coalition of local organizations will come together later this month to recognize the service, sacrifice and legacy of Black military veterans during a special Black History Month event.

The NAACP Champaign County Branch, Healing Invisible Wounds and the Champaign County Veterans Assistance Commission are partnering with faith, civic and educational leaders to present “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Honoring Our Veterans for Their Service, Sacrifice, and Legacy.”

Organizers say the event is designed to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Black men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The program will focus on courage, resilience and leadership, while creating space for healing, remembrance and collective gratitude across generations.

Opening remarks will be delivered by NAACP Champaign County Branch President Minnie Pearson. The keynote address will be given by Chief Timothy Tyler, whose leadership and commitment to service organizers say reflect the enduring legacy of local veterans.

The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at the American Legion Post 559, 704 N. Hickory St., Champaign.

Organizers describe the gathering as more than a commemorative ceremony, calling it a call to action to support and uplift veterans and their families. Community members of all ages are invited to attend.

Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by Feb. 23 at vetsheal.org or by emailing vetshealiw@gmail.com.
