CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) — Charlene Murray, interim executive director of Strides Shelter, has been selected as the next Champaign Township supervisor following a public interview process Tuesday night.
Murray and Champaign County Democratic Party Chair Mike Ingram were the two candidates considered by the township board to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former supervisor Kyle Patterson. The vacancy followed months of budget concerns involving township operations.
Both candidates appeared before the board and community members, outlining their qualifications and priorities for the position. Questions focused largely on fiscal oversight, collaboration with other governmental entities and the future of township services, including Strides Shelter.
Ingram emphasized the role of township government in providing direct assistance to residents facing financial hardship and housing instability. He highlighted the importance of general assistance funding, emergency support services and volunteer involvement, as well as the need to rebuild relationships with partner agencies and governments.
Murray focused on leadership, operational oversight and financial management as key responsibilities of the supervisor’s office. She cited her experience overseeing Strides Shelter, the township’s largest and most complex program, as preparation for the role.
Murray also noted that ongoing challenges at Strides have required significant administrative and public attention, at times limiting visibility and funding for other township programs. She identified improved communication, collaboration and accountability as priorities moving forward.
Following the interviews and deliberation, the township board selected Murray to serve as supervisor.
