URBANA, IL (Chambana Today) – A traffic accident in Urbana sent two drivers to the hospital, and one of whom was cited for driving under the influence.

On Saturday, at 8:12 a.m., the Urbana Police Department (UPD) responded to the intersection of Cunningham Ave. and Perkins Rd. for an accident involving two vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicate one of the vehicles, a blue Chevrolet truck, was being driven erratically and speeding northbound on Cunningham Ave. A gold Ford Explorer was southbound on Cunningham Ave, turning east onto Perkins Road, and had the right of way. The Chevrolet collided with the Ford and also struck a light pole, causing the driver’s ejection. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital for their injuries. 21-year-old William Daniel Melendez Scott of Champaign, who was driving the Chevrolet, was issued a citation for DUI and disobeying a traffic control signal. He remains in critical, but stable condition. The other driver was released from the hospital.

Urbana Police were assisted by Champaign County Sheriff’s office accident reconstruction team members. Urbana Police is asking for assistance from businesses nearby that may have video footage of the crash. UPD ask that anyone who has additional information please call 217-384-2320 or submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS.
