CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Chambana Today) – Last weekend, WIXY 100.3 turned the spotlight on female country stars — and breast cancer awareness — with its special WIX-SHE Winning Weekend campaign.

Starting Wednesday, October 15, listeners who heard a female country artist on the air were encouraged to text “SHE” to 217-355-3333 for a chance to win a yellow gold–plated charm necklace, courtesy of Champaign Jewelers. The necklace is a symbol of light, hope, and resilience, aligning with the station’s tribute to those affected by breast cancer.

“We wanted to do something that not only celebrates women in country music but also honors the strength of breast cancer fighters and survivors,” WIXY program director Duane Shannon said.

The initiative comes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when national organizations remind women to prioritize annual screenings. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 U.S. women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. An estimated 42,170 women and 510 men are expected to die from the disease in 2025 — approximately one life lost every 13 minutes.

Medical experts recommend annual mammograms starting at age 40 for those at average risk. Early detection significantly improves survival rates.

The campaign was sponsored by Champaign Jewelers. For more information on breast cancer awareness and prevention, visit nationalbreastcancer.org.
