URBANA, Ill. (Chambana Today) — With a unanimous vote from the Urbana City Council, Zachery Mikalik has officially been appointed Deputy Chief of the Urbana Police Department, a promotion recognizing nearly two decades of dedicated service and innovation.

Police Chief Larry D. Boone praised Mikalik’s 18-year tenure, noting his leadership as Services Division Commander, where he has overseen critical initiatives in officer training, wellness, and community engagement.

“Deputy Chief Mikalik is respected for his calm, results-driven leadership and his ability to meet complex challenges with structure and integrity,” Boone said.

Mikalik has launched several high-impact programs, including a comprehensive Officer Wellness Program, a live-action Crisis Co-Response Team, and the department’s first structured Internship Program. He also led efforts in compliance reform and recruitment, including the creation of the department’s first LinkedIn presence to modernize outreach.

A former Patrol Officer, Patrol Sergeant, and Services Lieutenant, Mikalik also served in the Illinois Army National Guard. He holds a master’s degree in management and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Illinois, combining academic knowledge with practical leadership.

In accepting the position, Mikalik emphasized his personal connection to the community.\

“I live in Urbana. My kids go to school in Urbana. I love this city, and I want to see what’s best for it,” he said. “With the chief’s guidance, I believe I can help achieve that in collaboration with the rest of the city and the department.”
